You can also buy numerous volumes of Walpole's letters at Powell's; several dozen volumes of Madame de Sévigné's letters are also available. Walpole coined the term "serendipity", and is the author of the famous quote "Life is a comedy to those who think and a tragedy to those who feel." (Various wordings of this quote are seen, as Walpole apparently used it more than once in his letters, although we've been unable to track down a specific instance.) Strawberry Hill passed through various branches of Walpole's family, including the Waldegraves, was briefly owned by an American hotel company, and eventually sold to the Catholic Education Council for use as St. Mary's College. The Friends of Strawberry Hill is currently raising money to restore the "little Gothic castle", as Walpole called it, which is being leased from St. Mary's. |
